Project to improve satisfaction by enhancing the cultural resources of Kohfukuji Temple
Kohfukuji Temple in Nara City, which boasts 1,300 years of history and is registered as a World Heritage Site as part of the "Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara," owns some of Japan's greatest cultural properties, including the National Treasure Ashura Statue, and is committed to their preservation, repair, and exhibition.
Ambitious efforts are underway to restore the temple to its original state, including the reconstruction of the Chukondo Hall in 2018, attracting tourists from around the world. The five-story pagoda of Kohfukuji, the symbol of the temple, will be covered by a temporary roof for conservation and repair, and will not be visible for a long time. In the meantime, Kohfukuji Temple and the Yomiuri Shimbun are implementing the "Prayer for the future" project to promote the attractiveness of cultural resources and create opportunities to become familiar with Japanese culture by leveraging each other's strengths until 2031, when the five-story pagoda repairs are scheduled to be completed. By providing foreign tourists with the opportunity to experience traditional Japanese culture, the project aims to promote understanding of the history and culture of the ancient capital of Nara and to promote cultural tourism in the surrounding areas.
